Live Blog: Biden and Ryan Square Off in Vice-Presidential Debate
It's rare that a vice presidential debate can swing an election, but following GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney's drubbing of President Barack Obama in Denver, Democrats are hoping Vice President Joe Biden can get them back on the right track.
Biden takes on the fresh faced GOP VP nominee, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, in a town hall format contest moderated by ABC News' Martha Raddatz. Biden, a skilled debater from a number of presidential primaries and 2008's match against Sarah Palin, will bring a folksy contrast to the fresh-faced energy of Ryan, a 42-year old fiscal conservative who is seen as the ideological and intellectual leader of his party's congressional faction.
Romney/Ryan have seen a surge in the polls since the former Mass. Governor put in a sterling performance last week; while the Obama campaign has accused him of moderating his positions for a national audience, he was deemed the winner thanks to an aggressive attack, coupled with an unexpected reticence from the president.
Biden is known for playing loose with public speaking rules; he often connects viscerally with an audience, but is prone to making gaffes and silly statements, as well. Ryan is less nationally known as an orator, but gave a full throated attack on Obama/Biden's policies during his RNC speech in August.

Raddatz asks the candidates, both Catholics, how their faith affects their views on abortion rights.
Ryan says you cannot separate faith from their life. He says he opposes abortion not just because of his faith, “but reason and science.” He recalls seeing his first child’s heartbeat at seven weeks. “I believe that life begins at conception. Those are the reasons I am pro-life,” the congressman says. He says Romney would oppose abortion except for rape, incest, or life of the mother. Then he accuses the administration of attacking religious freedom through its policies.
Biden says his religion informs his whole life and social views, including taking care of the people who can’t take care of themselves. While he accepts his church’s anti-abortion stance, he doesn’t favor imposing that view on others. As for attacking religions, Biden says no religious hospitals have to provide contraception for their employees.
Biden notes that next president may get one of two appointments to Supreme Court, and administration has already picked those with “open minds” on abortion while Romney would likely support nominees who oppose it. After Biden recalls that Ryan has talked about differences in types of abortion, Ryan says you don’t have to accept his views but he maintains them. -

@Chup
Then explain why some Republicans refuse contraceptive to those who have been forcibly raped? It's well known that Republican won't even support contraceptive for female soldiers who were raped in the military. The Republican spouts choice for everyone. Everyone but women. -

ANALYSIS:THE EMOTIONAL and personal discussion over abortion is a stark divide. Biden favors abortion rights (as Romney once did) and Ryan is against abortion except in cases of rape, incest and life of the mother. For a significant number of voters, this is an important and determinative distinction. -

Keep talking about small government and then prevent women from being able to make a private decision and be in control of their own bodies....force them to go through invasive tests and gradually whittle away at legal abortion step by step...they hypocrisy is disgusting. Plus the fact that, you know, they love the fetus and don't particularly like the born child. -

FACT CHECK: Obama broke his promise to cut the federal budget deficit in half by the end of his first term: Indeed, Obama pledged shortly after taking office that the deficit would be halved by the end of his first term.
“Now, this will not be easy,” Obama said at the Fiscal Responsibility Summit at the White House on Feb. 23, 2009. “It will require us to make difficult decisions and face challenges we’ve long neglected. But I refuse to leave our children with a debt that they cannot repay, and that means taking responsibility right now, in this administration, for getting our spending under control.”
The deficit in fiscal year 2009 was $1.4 trillion, meaning Obama would have had to shrink the deficit to $700 billion to keep his promise. The deficit was about $1.3 trillion in 2010, 2011 and 2012 and is projected to be about $900 billion in the current fiscal year. -
