Live Blog: Obama and Romney Square Off in Second Presidential Debate
President Obama has a history of coming through in the clutch, of delivering big moments with his back to the wall. There was the surprise win in the 2008 Iowa Caucus, his moving speech on race in the wake of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright's comments, and his efforts to pass his signature healthcare bill in the face of the nascent Tea Party movement.
Suddenly bruised, vulnerable and perhaps even behind in his fight for re-election, Obama will have to summon that fighting spirit once again in tonight's second debate against GOP challenger Mitt Romney.
STORY: Hollywood Reacts to the First Presidential Debate
Obama seemed to be cruising to an easy re-election in September; he was up big in polls, and Romney was making a litany of mistakes, culminating with the leaking of the infamous "47 percent" video. But the GOP nominee came out swinging against a stunned president in the first debate in Denver two weeks ago, scoring a clear victory and upending polls and expectations.
Now, polls are neck and neck -- Obama is up either two points or down four, depending on which barometer you follow -- and the president has to show that he has command of the issues facing the nation. He received some good news with the drop in unemployment two Fridays ago, and Vice President Biden was largely declared the winner of the VP Debate against the GOP's Paul Ryan, but the president still has to prove that he has the ideas and vitality to best Romney.
Will the president do that? Will it be enough? Tune in and follow along with THR's coverage to find out.

Hey, y'all. I'll be contributing some live analysis tonight during the debate. I'm a co-author, with Michael Kranish, of the Globe's biography of Mitt Romney, "The Real Romney." I also covered Romney as governor, and as a presidential hopeful in 2008. Fifteen minutes away, so stay tuned! -
Callum Borchers, Globe correspondent, here to fact check tonight's debate. I doubt we'll see many "gotcha" moments, but I'll add context to candidates' statements that might paint only part of the picture. I'll also point you to stories and video clips as they come up. -

ANALYSIS: I am Bryan Bender, the Boston Globe's national security reporter based in Washington. I will be providing context tonight on President Obama and Governor Romney's statements on defense and foreign policy. Keep an ear out for issues where the candidates have been pushing dueling narratives in recent weeks: the alleged terrorist attack in Libya; the American relationship with Israel; the timeline and pace of withdrawal in Afghanistan; defense spending cuts; and international efforts to halt Iran's enrichment of nuclear material. Look for President Obama to try to make Romney appear naive and unprepared for the role of commander-in-chief, even unnecessarily provocative (and remind voters of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden and his promise fulfilled to get out of Iraq). Look for Governor Romney to try to make the case that Obama has weakened America's influence in the world and undercut American exceptionalism -
ANALYSIS: One big thing to watch for tonight, I think, is how Romney responds if - OK, when - Obama goes after him. Romney can be great when he's on offense, as we saw in the Denver debate. But despite all the time he's spent in the political spotlight, he can still get rattled easily. A confident, calm Mitt Romney can attract votes. A brittle Mitt Romney can't. -

The debate will be moderated by CNN's Candy Crowley. A bit of a controversy, so to speak, over her approach -- the campaigns don't want her chiming in on the questions asked by voters during the town-hall segment of the debate, but Crowley said she never agreed to that. And the debate commission says no document signed by the campaigns that would limit her ability to ask questions is pending. -

Right now, pundits are saying what the candidates each need to do tonight. They're largely making it up as they go along; Obama must be aggressive, but not too aggressive; commanding but deferential to voters; smart but not wonky. Have it both ways, why don't you? -

ANALYSIS: This question on jobs after college plays to both Romney and Obama. Romney can hit the sluggish job market. Obama will surely talk about his work to help with student loans. Will he target Republicans for trying to keep rate high? It might be the first opportunity for a clear contrast. -

FACT CHECK: Romney's scholarship for high-scoring Mass. students: The John and Abigail Adams Scholarships cover only tuition at state colleges, not fees, which account for more than 80 percent of yearly costs at some schools. Just a quarter of the recipients actually choose to attend state colleges. -

“More debt and less jobs; I’m going to change that,” says Romney.
First question to Romney from 20-year-old student: How make sure I have a job after I graduate.
“Your question is one being asked by college kids all across this country,” says Romney.
The president is perched on the edge of his stool.
Romney says he has to make college more affordable and then make sure there is a job at the ready for them when they graduate. -
